Dangerous Spirits by Jordan L. Hawk6/29/2023 ![]() His beard jutted out in front of him, like an angry badger attached to his chin. ![]() Kelly, the Psychical Society’s president, slowly folded his arms over his chest. Although the windows were open to let in a breeze, the inescapable heat of early July remained oppressive even after sunset. “Er…” Henry resisted the impulse to tug at his collar. Stony faces stared back at him, and two of the women leaned together, whispering behind their fans. The small lecture hall remained utterly silent, save for the occasional cough or rattle of papers. Almost every member of the Baltimore Psychical Society had come to hear his lecture, and he scanned the faces of the men-and a few women-awaiting the spread of approving smiles. ![]() He stepped away from the podium where he’d placed his notes and gazed out over the gathering. “We successfully put an end to the haunting, and the usefulness of my inventions was proven once and for all.” “And that is my report,” Henry Strauss concluded. ![]() Any resemblance to actual events or locales or persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental. Anne rice the sleeping beauty novels6/29/2023 ![]() ![]() This book is somewhere between “Fifty Shades” and the works of the Marquis de Sade. While I haven’t read any of the “Fifty Shades” books, I doubt that the claim is true. There was a cover blurb on the version I read that says “If you liked 50 Shades, you’ll love the sleeping beauty trilogy.” This statement is clearly meant to capitalize on the success of those books. Part of the reason that there may be misunderstandings of what this book is, is how it’s been marketed. In essence, Sleeping Beauty enters into a finite period of sexual slavery (technically more sexual indentured servitude) in repayment for her rescue. That’s probably true for you, but for the run-of-the-mill reader, it’s pretty wild stuff. If you’re a hard-core sado-masochist, you may object that this isn’t so intense in subject matter. Since one may associate the fairy tale with lighthearted stories, many readers won’t be ready for the wide-ranging sexual and sadistic activity that goes on in this book. ![]() There are many such adult-targeted books based on children’s fairy tales, but the reader should be particularly aware of the nature of this story because it’s fairly hard-core. ![]() This is a bawdy take on the tale of Sleeping Beauty-and, in particular, the aftermath of her rescue and awakening. ![]() Seraphina shadow scale6/29/2023 ![]() ![]() Her story is intriguing and the characters make a refreshing addition to the genre. Seraphina really finds herself thrown into the thick of the action, and she is far from safe in her position at court. If you are looking for fantasy geared for young adults, then these books may just be for you. While they begin to uncover hints of a sinister plot to destroy the peace, Seraphina struggles to protect her own secret, the secret behind her musical gift, one so terrible that its discovery could mean her very life. ![]() Seraphina is drawn into the investigation, partnering with the captain of the Queen’s Guard, the dangerously perceptive Prince Lucian Kiggs. ![]() An unusually gifted musician, she joins the court just as a member of the royal family is murdered-in suspiciously draconian fashion. Seraphina Dombegh has reason to fear both sides. As the treaty’s anniversary draws near, however, tensions are high. Folding themselves into human shape, dragons attend court as ambassadors, and lend their rational, mathematical minds to universities as scholars and teachers. Eragon-author Christopher Paolini calls them, “Some of the most interesting dragons I’ve read in fantasy.”įour decades of peace have done little to ease the mistrust between humans and dragons in the kingdom of Goredd. In her New York Times bestselling and Morris Award-winning debut, Rachel Hartman introduces mathematical dragons in an alternative-medieval world to fantasy and science-fiction readers of all ages. ![]() The real alice network6/29/2023 ![]() So when Charlie's parents banish her to Europe to have her "little problem" taken care of, Charlie breaks free and heads to London, determined to find out what happened to the cousin she loves like a sister.ġ915.
